While we certainly can waste time microblogging, I've found I've made a lot of great connections, including the fellow who wrote this helpful article on Pownce. As you so rightly mention, this is also a way of getting more traffic to your blog. (I got here from your Pownce post) My traffic has increased not only because I announce my new posts on Pownce, but because I'm networking with other bloggers who write about related topics. We are now reading each others blogs, commenting on them, stumbling them, digging them etc. We never asked each other to do it, we were just interested in each others work.

Of course neither I nor the others are always talking about Web stuff. Sometimes, esp. when insomnia sets in, Pownce is just a fun place to wander when bored.
